Many people in Bemidji who end up in drug rehab are dual diagnosis clients with co-occurring mental and substance abuse problems. Surprisingly, as many as 1/3 of those who suffer with mental health issues in Bemidji also become involved in substance abuse at some point in their lives. These dual diagnosis clients often turn to drugs or alcohol to self medicate in an attempt to relieve the symptoms of an underlying psychiatric condition. Some addicts aren't even diagnosed with a psychological condition, and only when they begin to receive treatment at a drug treatment center is this sort of issue discovered. This alone can sometimes help resolve addiction issues and put the individual in a position to get rehabilitation for both conditions so that they have a good chance of remaining clean and sober and psychologically healthy in the future.
