Many addicted individuals in DHS who end up in drug rehab are dual diagnosis clients with co-occurring mental and substance abuse problems. In fact, as many as 1/3 of those who struggle with mental health issues in DHS, Virginia also take part in substance abuse at some time in their lives. These dual diagnosis clients typically turn to alcohol or drugs to self medicate as a way to alleviate the symptoms of an underlying psychological issue. Some addicts aren't even diagnosed with a psychological condition, and only when they begin to receive treatment at a drug rehab program is this sort of psychological condition brought to light. This alone can sometimes help resolve addiction issues and put the person in a position to receive rehabilitation for both disorders so that they have a good chance of remaining abstinent and mentally stable in the future.
