Many people in Denmark who find their way to drug rehab are dual diagnosis clients with co-occurring mental and substance abuse problems. In fact, as many as 1/3 of those who suffer with mental health issues in Denmark also take part in substance abuse at some time in their lives. These dual diagnosis clients typically turn to alcohol or drugs to self medicate as a way to alleviate the symptoms of an underlying psychological disorder. Some treatment clients aren't even diagnosed with a psychological condition, and only when they begin to receive treatment at a drug treatment center is this sort of issue brought to light. This alone can help resolve addiction issues and put the individual in a position to get treatment for both disorders so that they have a strong chance of remaining abstinent and mentally healthy in the future.
