Many people in East Berlin who find their way to drug rehab are dual diagnosis clients with co-occurring mental and substance abuse problems. Surprisingly, as many as 1/3 of those who suffer with mental health issues in East Berlin also take part in substance abuse at some time in their lives. These dual diagnosis clients typically turn to alcohol or drugs to self medicate in an attempt to ease the symptoms of an underlying psychiatric condition. Some treatment clients aren't even diagnosed with a disorder, and only when they begin to receive treatment at a drug rehab center is this sort of issue uncovered. This in itself can sometimes help resolve addiction issues and put the individual in a position to get treatment for both conditions so that they have a good chance of remaining clean and sober and psychologically healthy in the future.
