- From 1995 to 2005 the number of Americans abusing controlled prescription drugs jumped from 6.2 to 15.2 million.
- In 2000 there were a total of 131 million opioid prescriptions dispensed by U.S. retail pharmacies. This number increased substantially in the years following with upwards of 210 million opioid prescriptions dispensed by U.S. retail pharmacies in 2010.
- It is thought that in some parts of the country physicians and psychiatrists are prescribing the prescription drug Seroquel for off-prescription purposes of drug detoxification. The drug addicts are then taking their Seroquel to the streets and selling them for a profit.
- Prescription opioids affect the same receptors in the user's brain as heroin and are highly addictive.
