Many people in Gap who end up in drug rehab are dual diagnosis clients with co-occurring mental and substance abuse problems. Actually, as many as 1/3 of those who struggle with mental health issues in Gap also become involved in substance abuse at some time in their lives. These dual diagnosis clients typically turn to drugs or alcohol to self medicate in an attempt to relieve the symptoms of an underlying psychiatric disorder. Some treatment clients aren't even diagnosed with a disorder, and only when they make it to a drug treatment center is this sort of psychological condition uncovered. This in itself can sometimes help resolve addiction issues and put the individual in a position to receive rehabilitation for both conditions so that they have a strong chance of remaining abstinent and psychologically stable in the future.
