Many people in Gravity who find their way to drug rehab are dual diagnosis clients with co-occurring mental and substance abuse problems. Surprisingly, as many as 1/3 of those who struggle with mental health issues in Gravity, Iowa also take part in substance abuse at some point in their lives. These dual diagnosis clients typically turn to drugs or alcohol to self medicate in an attempt to alleviate the symptoms of an underlying psychological issue. Some treatment clients aren't even diagnosed with a disorder, and only when they begin to receive treatment at a drug rehab facility is this sort of issue uncovered. This in itself can sometimes help resolve addiction issues and put the individual in a position to receive rehabilitation for both conditions so that they have a good chance of remaining abstinent and mentally stable in the future.
