Many people in Guthrie Center who find their way to drug rehab are dual diagnosis clients with co-occurring mental and substance abuse problems. Surprisingly, as many as 1/3 of those who struggle with mental health issues in Guthrie Center also take part in substance abuse at some time in their lives. These dual diagnosis clients typically turn to alcohol or drugs to self medicate in an attempt to alleviate the symptoms of an underlying psychological disorder. Some addicts aren't even diagnosed with a disorder, and only when they make it to a drug rehabilitation facility is this sort of psychological condition discovered. This in itself can sometimes help resolve addiction issues and put the person in a position to receive rehabilitation for both conditions so that they have a strong chance of remaining abstinent and psychologically stable in the future.
