- Historically, prescription drug addiction has been the most underreported drug abuse problem in the nation (National Institute of Drug Abuse).
- One method of OxyContin withdrawal is to treat each individual symptom with a non-opiate medication; this is the most common approach in an inpatient environment. A medication is given for anxiety, another for nausea, another for diarrhea, etc. This OxyContin withdrawal method is less uncomfortable than quitting cold turkey, and is not prolonged through the use of substitute opiate medications.
