Many people in Ireland who end up in drug rehab are dual diagnosis clients with co-occurring mental and substance abuse problems. Surprisingly, as many as 1/3 of those who struggle with mental health issues in Ireland also take part in substance abuse at some point in their lives. These dual diagnosis clients often turn to drugs or alcohol to self medicate as a way to relieve the symptoms of an underlying psychological issue. Some addicted individuals aren't even diagnosed with a psychological condition, and only when they make it to a drug rehabilitation facility is this sort of psychological condition discovered. This alone can help resolve addiction issues and put the individual in a position to get treatment for both conditions so that they have a good chance of remaining abstinent and mentally healthy in the future.
