- Several programs exist targeting prescription abuse. The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) is actively involved in prescription-monitoring programs. It has launched a toll-free international hotline (877-RxAbuse) for people to anonymously report illegal drug diversion, including suspicious Internet pharmacies.
- A recent study found that many young people are abusing barbiturates as a means of counteracting the effects of the illegal drugs they consume. When they take meth or cocaine they may use a barbiturate to "come down" from the stimulating effects of the drug.
- The effects of prescription drug abuse vary according to circumstances. Like other kinds of drugs, however, any overuse of prescription drugs can alter your mood and disrupt your good judgment, making it easier to do stupid or dangerous things.
- The history of prescription drug abuse dates back to the civil war era when wounded soldiers started abusing morphine which was prescribed as a painkiller.
