Neurontin commonly known as Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant. Neurontin works by treating abnormal neuron activity. Neurontin can also be used for treating some kinds or types of epilepsy. It is also possible to treat neuropathic pain using Neurontin. Because Neurontin affects the central nervous system, it is associated or can cause numerous side effects.
Although most people do not experience any side effects when using Neurontin, it is still possible to experience some side effects. Some of the most common side effects include; drowsiness, dizziness, shakiness and coordination problems. These Neurontin side effects are common and minor thus they can be easily treated. Some of the common serious Neurontin side effects include; depression and severe problems with coordination. If you happen to develop such serious effects that take too long to improve, it is always advisable to seek immediate medical attention.
Neurontin commonly known as Gabapentin has been thoroughly studied in very many clinical trials. In such studies, the effects occurring in individuals in a group taking Neurontin are recorded, documented and compared to the effects occurring in other groups of people that aren't taking the drug. This is important in terms of establishing how side effects occur, appear and how they are compared to other groups of individuals that aren't taking the drug.
According to clinical studies, some of the common Neurontin side effects include; dizziness in approximately 28% of all Neurontin patients, drowsiness in approximately 21.4% of all Neurontin patients, coordination problems in approximately 12.5% of all Neurontin patients, infections in approximately 10% of all patients, fever, vomiting, nausea, fluid retention or swelling in the feet arms or hands and unusual eye movement in approximately 8% of all Neurontin patients. Other common Neurontin effects that affect approximately 5% of all Neurontin patients include; shakiness or tremor, blurred vision or double vision, fatigue or weakness, constipation or diarrhoea, dry mouth, accidental injury, bronchitis, hyperactivity, sore throat, speech problems, nervousness, amnesia, gas, heartburn or indigestion, back pain, twitching, high blood pressure, ear infection and hot flashes.
Serious Neurontin side effects occur less frequently. They are however more serious thus they should be reported to your doctor immediately. Some of the serious Neurontin side effects include; depression, hostility, confusion, severe dizziness, poor coordination that doesn't improve even with time, allergic reactions i.e. hives, unexplained rashes, itching, suicidal behaviour/thinking and unexplained swelling.
Rare Neurontin effects refer to those side effects that occur in less than 1% of Neurontin patients. Because such side effects are very rare, they are usually very uncommon that it can be extremely difficult to establish whether they have been caused Neurontin or by any other factors that are not related to Neurontin.
Some of the rare Neurontin effects include; unexplained weight loss, migraines, hangover effect, haemorrhoids, high cholesterol, ulcers, IBS or irritable bowel syndrome, hiatal hernia, thyroid problems i.e. hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, arthritis, snoring, sexual problems, psoriasis, sensitivity to sunlight and kidney stones.
It is important to note that Neurontin patients may experience other side effects that may not necessarily be listed above. Unfortunately, it is not possible for your doctor to determine in advance if you are likely to experience any of the side effects mentioned above. You must first take Neurontin for you to experience side effects because everyone is different meaning that your reaction with Neurontin may not necessarily be the same with another person. You must therefore ensure that you let your doctor know if you experience any effect while using Neurontin.
It is also important to let your doctor know in advance if you suffer from any medical conditions or if you are currently taking any other medication. This is because Neurontin may react with some medication resulting in some side effects that may be severe. Also, there are some medical conditions that may not go well with Neurontin. It is therefore important to disclose as much information as possible to your doctor for them to establish if it is safe to prescribe Neurontin or they need to prescribe alternative medicine. You must disclose all information i.e. if you have an addiction history because Neurontin is known to be addictive especially when used for a long time.
