- The 2010 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) reports that approximately 6,600 people each day abuse a prescription drug for the first time.
- A side effect of Desoxyn (meth by prescription) is dry mouth.
- When a person abuses prescription drugs they may do so by a different route of administration. While a majority of prescription drugs come in pill or capsule form, some users will crush the pill/capsule then swallow the powder, sniff the powder or "cook" it by turning it to liquid and then injecting it.
- A large part of the lure to prescription drugs is that the prescription comes from a doctor, a reputable source. The drug abuser does not have to find a drug dealer, they just open their parents, grandparents, etc. medicine cabinet and have easy access to some of the most potent and additive drugs on the market.

Dual Diagnosis Clients with Mental and Substance Abuse Problems - Oklahoma City
Many people in Oklahoma City who end up in drug rehab are dual diagnosis clients with co-occurring mental and substance abuse problems. In fact, as many as 1/3 of those who suffer with mental health issues in Oklahoma City also take part in substance abuse at some time in their lives. These dual diagnosis clients frequently turn to alcohol or drugs to self medicate as a way to alleviate the symptoms of an underlying psychiatric issue. Some addicted individuals aren't even diagnosed with a disorder, and only when they make it to a drug rehab facility is this sort of psychological condition brought to light. This alone can sometimes help resolve addiction issues and put the person in a position to receive treatment for both disorders so that they have a good chance of remaining abstinent and mentally stable in the future.
