- In 2008, New York experienced 8.4 prescription drug overdose deaths per 100,000 people.
- Between 2004 and 2009, drug overdose deaths in Virginia were the second leading cause of death for residents age 25 to 34 and the third leading cause of death for residents aged 15 to 24 and 55 to 64. Many of these deaths were as a result of overdose associated with the nonmedical use of prescription opioids.
