Many people in Portland who end up in drug rehab are dual diagnosis clients with co-occurring mental and substance abuse problems. Surprisingly, as many as 1/3 of those who struggle with mental health issues in Portland, Michigan also become involved in substance abuse at some point in their lives. These dual diagnosis clients typically turn to drugs or alcohol to self medicate as a way to alleviate the symptoms of an underlying psychiatric disorder. This in itself can sometimes help resolve addiction issues and put the individual in a position to get treatment for both disorders so that they have a strong chance of remaining abstinent and psychologically healthy in the future.
