Many addicted individuals in Victoria who find their way to drug rehab are dual diagnosis clients with co-occurring mental and substance abuse problems. Surprisingly, as many as 1/3 of those who suffer with mental health issues in Victoria also take part in substance abuse at some point in their lives. These dual diagnosis clients typically turn to alcohol or drugs to self medicate in an attempt to ease the symptoms of an underlying psychological condition. Some addicted individuals aren't even diagnosed with a psychological condition, and only when they make it to a drug rehab center is this sort of psychological condition brought to light. This in itself can sometimes help resolve addiction issues and put the individual in a position to receive treatment for both conditions so that they have a strong chance of remaining abstinent and mentally healthy in the future.
