Many addicted individuals in Washington who end up in drug rehab are dual diagnosis clients with co-occurring mental and substance abuse problems. Actually, as many as 1/3 of those who suffer with mental health issues in Washington also become involved in substance abuse at some point in their lives. These dual diagnosis clients often turn to alcohol or drugs to self medicate as a way to relieve the symptoms of an underlying psychiatric condition. Some addicted individuals aren't even diagnosed with a disorder, and only when they make it to a drug rehabilitation program is this sort of issue uncovered. This alone can sometimes help resolve addiction issues and put the person in a position to receive rehabilitation for both disorders so that they have a good chance of remaining clean and sober and psychologically healthy in the future.
